CNA Financial Q3 2026 Profit Drops as Catastrophe Losses Rise
CNA Financial reports third-quarter net income of $196M, down sharply from $403M a year earlier, weighed by higher catastrophe losses.
CNA Financial posted third-quarter 2026 net income of $196 million, or $0.72 per share, a steep decline from $403 million recorded in the same period a year ago, the insurer reported. Core income, a measure that strips out certain investment gains and losses, fell to $203 million, or $0.75 per share, compared with $409 million in the prior-year quarter.
The company's property and casualty segment bore the brunt of the earnings pressure, delivering core income of $397 million against $456 million in the year-earlier period. CNA attributed the deterioration to weaker underlying underwriting results combined with elevated catastrophe losses, two headwinds that compressed margins across the P&C book.

The results underscore the difficulty insurers face balancing pricing discipline with loss volatility in an environment where natural catastrophe frequency remains elevated. CNA, one of the larger U.S. commercial property and casualty carriers, had not provided forward guidance in the excerpted release.
